The films that amuse, bore and rock the world of Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich…

THE MOVIE THAT ALWAYS MAKES ME CRY
I’m pretty sappy in the movie theatre. There are certain movies that I have a really powerful relationship with. I’ve seen Mike Leigh’s NAKED at least 10 times. That and Gary Oldman’s NIL BY MOUTH always get me emotional. But the list is so fucking long – I often get overwhelmed because every year I see so many films.

THE MOVIE THAT EVERYONE LOVES BUT I HATE
It takes a lot for me to fucking walk out of a movie. But BEFORE MIDNIGHT, which got like 80-something on Metacritic, well… I hadn’t seen the first two movies – although I knew they were very talkie – but, I’m sorry, the fucking pretentious needle just went off the chart. I think my fiancée and I only lasted 45 minutes.

THE MOVIE THAT EVERYONE HATES BUT I LOVE
One movie I really quite enjoyed which got fucking panned by everybody was THE WATCH. I thought they were really clever, those guys; I thought it was very smart. And I understand political issues in the wake of current events getting in the way but I thought that was really funny. And then it got hammered.

MY FAVOURITE MUSIC MOVIE
I’d say GIMME SHELTER. The time period, the Rolling Stones, the access to them, the concert… it’s just phenomenal. It’s such a time capsule. I’m very into music history and understanding where things come from so when you sit down and watch that film and see that kind of access to, basically, the biggest band in the world at that time, it’s just fascinating.

THE MOVIE I WISH I’D DONE THE SOUNDTRACK TO
Whenever I see a great film, I’m in awe of it. And when I see Derek Cianfrance’s THE PLACE BEYOND THE PINES, I feel like we’re a part of it because I know Metallica has played a big role in Derek’s life [Ulrich became close friends with superfan Cianfrance after admiring Blue Valentine]. The Place Beyond The Pines is my favourite movie this year.

MY DESERT ISLAND MOVIE
You’d have to take THE GODFATHER: PART II. The last 30 minutes of that film is probably the greatest 30 minutes in cinema history. I know it’s a standard answer but those films really do stand the test of time.
